Ueno Ameyoko

"Ameyoko" is market street with 400 meters of shops spread along the Yamanote line from Ueno station to Okachimachi station. The name "Ameyoko" is said that it its a short form for "Ameya Yokocho" (candy store alley), as candies were traditionally sold there. Also, it is said that "Ame" stands for "America", because a lot of American products used to be available there. This lively market is well known as a market full of shoppers buying fresh food at the end of the year to prepare for the New Year.
